Becoming Crow

Becoming Crow is a series of watercolor studies on paper that emerged between 2016 - 2017. Perhaps there is a connection between this subject matter first appearing and the years I began splitting my time between NYC and the Catskills. To this day, abstract bird forms and crows still surprise me when they appear in newer pieces.

Concurrent with this set of paintings, I felt guided to teach classes inspired by human animal instincts and how to make a deeper connection with the animal world. Without any knowledge of “who” was appearing in my paintings, a student gave me her personal copy of Crow Planet by Lyanda Lynn Haupt to add to my library. The book is equal parts discussion, dissertation and manifesto for adopting crow-like behaviors while navigating the challenges of being human. A favorite: crows often step one foot in front of the other.

[The crow’s caw] mingled with the slight murmur of the village, the sound of children at play, as one stream empties gently into another, and the wild and tame are one. What a delicious sound! It is not merely crow calling to crow, for it speaks to me too. I am part of one great creature with him; if he has voice, I have ears.  - Henry David Thoreau
