Color Theater Collection: Blue x Loy Luo Space, NYC

I remember the precise moment as a college art history major when Yves Klein’s Bleu Monochrome (1961) came up on the slide projection. The painting astounded me. I had never before experienced a conscious response to the energy of color before without figuration or compositional form as a vehicle. Many people agree the power and poetry of blue is unique. The name for blue didn’t always exist and is a recent addition to color history; thus, blue is elusive and mysterious. My favorite book on this topic is Bluets by Maggie Nelson.

It was thrilling to engage in an interactive art and performance event with five other artists when I was invited to show five of my watercolor and ink paintings from the Caves series in Loy Luo Space’s Color Theater Collection: BLUE. For ten days, the NYC corner gallery vibrated at the intersection of Walker and Lafayette.
