Healing Arts through Music and Movement x Shane Shanahan
Shane Shanahan and TaraMarie Perri setting up the space during a Silk Road Project residency at Harvard University.
In 2007, I met percussionist Shane Shanahan and we began experimenting with mind/body movement practices and live music in New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Dance Department classrooms. Teaching opportunities grew and soon we were sharing our unique group offerings in other universities and venues, notably Harvard, Steps on Broadway and Mark Morris Dance Center. Over the years, each encounter with like-spirited students, therapeutic practitioners, educators, artists, and performers informed our methods, deepened our mission, and expanded a shared body of work. Today, we co-teach special events to create a sense of sanctuary and exploration in community spaces and travel to natural settings across the US and abroad to host immersive healing arts retreats.
Our intention is to share our personal approaches to spiritual exploration and artistic expression. The elements of music, movement, art, and nature are always at the heart of each group gathering. The people who are attending, and a sense of place, are central factors when determining the curriculum and design for each group event. The overarching purpose of all workshops, immersions, and retreats is to bring practitioners together in a supportive learning environment with experiential discovery exercises and time dedicated to independent study and therapeutic application. Participants leave with a more genuine sense of one’s self alongside a deeper understanding of the universal and harmonizing principles that connect us all.
Through a collaborative hands-on approach, each project is born from an authentic intention and free to take on a life of its own. Residency invitations often fall into one or a combination of the following:
• Interdisciplinary Arts Collaborations
• Urban Sanctuary Workshops
• Healing Arts Immersions
• Nature Retreats
